The Big Red F-ing Tent...

One of the selling points of the new Nationals Park was the "breathtaking views of the Capitol." Recently, the Nationals Intelligentsia have decided that a Big Red Tent is what's needed to fully compliment DC's skyline...

Here it is. In all its Glory...

You'll notice:

1. The tent is gigundous (check that link, it's the Urban Dictionary definition of the word).

2. It's not being used.

3. There are two parking lots. They use the one that obstructs the view of the Dome.

4. And it looks pretty permanent. This despite Mr. Kasten's promise in my season ticket brochure that I would have "The same great view, the same amazing experience. Each and every time you visit Nationals Park." I guess my new view, is an obstructed one.

Let's walk this back a bit...

First, there is a big debate about parking at the stadium. Some wanted crappy above ground parking because it's cheaper, the others wanted underground parking because it's prettier. Crappy wins.*

So, they build TWO above ground parking lots in the outfield obstructing much of the view towards the nation's capital.

Then the Nationals and Metro team up for one of the most successful ad campaigns in the history of the world, by scaring the bejesus (yes, urban dictionary definition) out of us saying that driving and parking to and at the stadium will lead to calamity (yep, urban), thus rendering the parking lots obsolete.

Now, in an attempt to lure more fans and anger existing ones, they erect (of course) this eyesore.

Last night this all inspired me to write a verse of song.

It's to the tune of "Total Eclipse of the Heart."

Once upon a time I had a Capitol View
Now I can see only a tarp
Noting I can do
There's a partial eclipse at the park.

(Feel free to submit more...)

*CORRECTION: Thanks to those who reminded me that Mayor Williams and others were among the folks who originally wanted underground parking at Nationals Park.

I have the same problem in my seats.

It is terrible.

The Nationals' customer service reps helped sell these seats as having a Capitol view.

It seems like this team just goes out of its way to piss off its fanbase.

Hilarious.

And people will keep shoveling money at the Nationals.

The parking situation above/under ground is actually the opposite. Mayor Williams wanted the parking underground.

Yes, please correct the post. The city really wanted underground parking, but the Lerners insisted on the awful above ground structures.

The District wanted to do it right by constructing below-grade parking. The Lerners were worried parking wouldn't be available by opening day (nevermind the fact that this ballpark is supposed to anchor the neighborhood for decades) and pushed for two crappy garages. Lerners win. Then they erect the red tent, compounding matters. Now they're withholding rent and seeking a daily penalty from the District. I don't know who's right and who's wrong, but things certainly seem bungled.

The Lerners' big ol' M Street building blocks the view of the dome for a lot of folks on the first-base side, too.

"Great views of the Capitol Dome" has been all hype from day one. You know what has great views of the Capitol? The Mall. And I don't have to pay to get in there.

But at least you still have a clear view of those beautiful billboards. It's a nice reminder that you paid too much for your seats as you stare at ads for overpriced oil, overprised beer, overpriced mortgages, and overpriced insurance.

what a disaster, are the views from the upper 300 level seats blocked now too as a result of the tent?

someone get Boswell or Fisher to write about this.

How about this inspired verse, altered lyrics to "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" by the Cowsills:

I sat there looking at the game
Tried to look at the Dome
I can see this well from home
A red tent stared back at me

Then I knew (I knew... I knew... I knew... I knew)
That my view was crappy (crappy... crappy...)
(That my view was very crappy)
Parking over there... (over there!)
Parking everywhere! (everywhere)

(I hate the parking tent!)
Oh I don't know just why; it simply caught my eye
(Giant, red effing tent!)
Promised a view so fine, they must think we're blind
(All are blind... All are blind)

The picture is from Section 313. So what used to be so good, is good no longer.

And well done Travis!
